For the last few years, our engineers have been busily engaged on a range of new instruments for chemical analysis. We are now ready to launch the equipment under the name 'Modulab'. A system is built of analytical modules that are fitted together to meet the requirements of a particular application. Modulab is designed for low maintenance and hands-free operation - there are no knobs or switches, as all adjustments are done automatically by the internal controller. The whole system is configured for a particular analysis using Windows-based software tools. This makes it suitable not only for laboratary use, but also for unattended on-line analyses and monitoring. There is no peristaltic pump. Instead liquid is moved around the system using electically operated micro-pumps and one or more programmable syringe drives. Reagents are added using a novel technique. The system has a solid state colorimeter and a fluorimeter and there are modules for electro-chemical analyses using ion-selective electrodes. A Microsoft Windows based program is used to perform laboratory analyses, and a GNU/Linux based embedded system will be available for on-line analysis with facilities for generating alarms, telemetry and network connectivity.
